About Baja Malas

Suzi, owner of Baja Malas

Hola! Buenos días.

As a yogi for over 20 years, I’ve attended many different types of workshops including a mala making workshop some years ago. I attended the workshop knowing I would give the mala necklace to my teenage daughter as a gift, but something magical & unexpected happened while hand-knotting each bead together.

As I contemplated how I could give this special piece of jewelry greater significance, I decided to infuse 108 different prayers, wishes, intentions, dreams & desires I had for my daughter and her life, into each bead & knot. As a mother, this became a powerful meditative experience for me…to think of 108 different prayers for the kind of life I hope she would lead, the woman she would grow to become, and the experiences life would bestow upon her.

When I gave the mala to my daughter, I explained on a little notecard what I had done. Of course, she cried. I cried. She loved it. She still loves it. She still wears the mala. It’s traveled the world with her and when she’s not wearing it, it hangs in her bedroom. And the notecard I gave her….I’ve spotted it sitting on her nightstand over the years.

In 2019, my husband & I embarked on an exciting adventure, moving from Southern California to Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico. I contemplated what type of work would be most meaningful to me at this point in life and how I could connect with the local community. I remembered my mala making experience and decided to offer a few workshops where I quickly discovered a desire for this type of meaningful, meditative art experience blossomed among the local community & its visitors.

When I received requests to make malas for stores to sell, I then found myself as a jewelry designer and maker as well! Helping women propel to their greatest life possible has been a mission in my life for many years, and so when I connected with a local women’s collective in Todos Santos, Manos Magicas, to help me, I knew I had created something meant to be.

My intention with Baja Malas is to provide my guests with a meaningful experience, create jewelry that inspires, and help local Todos Santeños women earn a living.
